2016 Anime Watch List

It’s the first quarter of the year and there are a lot of anime shows to start watching (or in my case, binge watch) or to watch out for. Here is a list of what I think one must add to their must-watch list for this year.

Note: The list is ranked from first to last.

Genre: drama, psychological thriller

Satoru Fujinuma is a struggling manga artist who has the ability to turn back time and prevent deaths. When his mother is killed he turns back time to solve the mystery, but ends up back in elementary school, just before the disappearance of his classmate Kayo.

Personally, this anime left me hanging every single time. The plot is awesome if you’re into mysteries and thrillers. I couldn’t wait for the next episode that waiting for a whole week to pass for a new episode was close to torture. Yes, I am exaggerating but you get the idea.

The whole story has a lot of twists and turns. It will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.

Genre: drama, romance

Note: If you have not watched Season 1 then don’t watch this first. 🙂

This is the continuation of the story about Shirayuki, a young independent and persistent girl with rare red hair who is under training as the palace herbalist, Zen Wistalia, second prince of the kingdom of Clarines, and the journey and struggles that they all go through in dealing with their new found love for each other and the unwanted attention that Shirayuki brings due to her hair.

This is not your ordinary Snow White story. Also known as Snow White with the Red Hair, this anime will leave you getting the heart-flutters. The romance between Shirayuki and Zen is sweet and light but not too sweet that it’s all mushy stuff going on. It is, unfortunately, a bit frustrating to wait for new episodes since it takes at least a week or a week and a half to be released.

Genre: comedy, fantasy

Kazuma Satō is a hikikomori (shut-in) die-hard fan of games, anime, and manga. A traffic accident brings his disappointingly brief life to an end, or it should have, but he wakes up and sees a beautiful girl who introduces herself as a goddess. She asks him if he’d like to go to another world but he can only bring one thing with him. Kazumi chooses to bring the goddess. With that, he is transported to another world and his great adventure subjugating the demon king begins, but first the hard work of finding food, clothing, and shelter begins. Kazuma wants to live in peace, but the goddess raises one problem after another, and then the demon king’s army has its eyes set on him.

What do you get when you throw in a masochistic pervy crusader, an annoying and useless goddess, an explosion-happy arch wizard, and a novice adventurer? The worst mmo party ever! If you are fond of a bit of slapstick comedy and sarcasms then this is for you. Follow these four on their adventures and mishaps.

The characters (except Kazuma) are a hoot. It is a bit of a harem because the rest of his companions are females. He treats this world he is in as some sort of MMO game and defeating the demon king is his only ticket out. Unfortunately, he is stuck with the worst “players” ever. To find out more, do watch. I recommend it.

Genre: adventure, drama, fantasy

When Haruhito awakens, he’s in the dark. He doesn’t know where he is, why is he here, and where he came from. Around him there are several men and women who have the same circumstances. Haruhito and his companions find themselves in a “game-like world” called Grimgar and must form a party, cooperate, and learn new skills to survive the harsh environment together.

The anime is slightly reminiscent of SAO (Sword Art Online) and Log Horizon however the characters have no idea who they are or how they got there in the first place. There are no “hidden storage” or things like that is similar in an MMO game within this anime. Like any other game character, they have to earn skills and learn them, kill necessary monsters for certain monster drops/rewards.

And the art! The art is AMAZING!!

Genre: action, comedy, supernatural

In the near future, in a world born of human imagination, what humans would call ghosts or monsters appear, and they come to be called “phantoms.” Haruhiko Ichijō, is a first year at Hosea Academy along with his upperclassman Mai Kawakami, who fights phantoms with the ability “Spirit of Five Elements,” Reina Izumi, who has the ability “Phantom Eater,” and Koito Minase, who fights phantoms in solitude. They experience the ups and downs of high school life before a certain incident leads them to the truth of this world.

The art reminds me so much of K-ON! because of the shape of their faces and their eyes. The plot itself is interesting but not catchy enough for me to be excited a lot for the next episode.

Genre: science fiction

In a world where flying is as simple as riding a bicycle, there is a popular sport called “Flying Circus” (dogfight race). The protagonist who once hoped for a future in this sport suffered a setback due to an overwhelming defeat, and withdrew from the sport for this and some other reason. However, he met the transfer student Asuka Kurashina, and in teaching her to fly the skies, the old passion returned. He takes part in the Flying Circus again.

Grav shoes. Enough said.

Genre: comedy, romance, slice of life

Natsuki, Tomoya, Keiichi, and Tsuyoshi are high school students and close friends: The four boys have no club activities, and they hurry through their studies so they can spend their days having fun. Their main topic of interest: love. Natsuki has an unrequited crush on Anna, a girl from another class, and his friends keep meddling in their relationship.

These 15min/episode anime is just so cute. The characters’ personalities remind me a bit of the characters in Free! except that one of them is sadistic.

Genre: comedy, science fiction, action, echii

In an age when large-scale natural disasters frequently happen all over the world, when cyborgs and autonomous robots are beginning to appear on the market in technologically advanced nations, and major world powers compete for technology and resources, the divide between rich and poor grows and the future for the poor looks bleak. In this transitional stage, everyone wanders around in a self-indulgent daze and the way out isn’t clear… This is the story of how two cybernetically enhanced girls meet.

Its funny and is overloaded with cute characters and a lot of moe.

Genre: action, comedy

One-Punch Man is a super hero who has trained so hard that his hair has fallen out, and who can overcome any enemy with one punch. However, because he is so strong, he has become bored and frustrated with winning all his battles so easily.

Author’s Note: all media was taken from various sources via Google. Plot summary was taken from only one source which would be the Anime News Network
